Accessibility<\/strong><\/p>

Accessibility is a fundamental requirement for ensuring that persons with disabilities can participate fully and effectively in society on an equal basis with others. An accessible environment enables persons with disabilities to live independently, access services, pursue education and employment opportunities, and participate in social, cultural, recreational and political life.<\/p>

Mauritius is a State Party to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD)<\/strong>. In accordance with Article 9 of the Convention<\/strong>, appropriate measures are taken to identify and eliminate obstacles and barriers to accessibility and to ensure access, on an equal basis with others, to the physical environment, transportation, information and communications, including information and communication technologies and systems, and other facilities and services open or provided to the public.<\/p>

Accessibility extends beyond the physical environment and includes access to information, communication, transportation, technology, facilities and services that are open or provided to the public.<\/p>

Physical Accessibility<\/strong><\/p>

Physical accessibility ensures that buildings, facilities and public spaces can be accessed and used safely and independently by persons with disabilities. Accessibility features may include:<\/p>

  • Ramps and step-free entrances;<\/li>
  • Accessible parking spaces;<\/li>
  • Handrails and tactile paving;<\/li>
  • Accessible toilets;<\/li>
  • Elevators and lifts;<\/li>
  • Appropriate signage and wayfinding systems; and<\/li>
  • Adequate lighting and obstacle-free pathways.<\/li><\/ul>

    In Mauritius, the Building Control (Accessibility and Gender Compliance in Buildings) (Amendment) Regulations 2022<\/strong> provide for accessibility requirements in buildings and contribute to creating an inclusive built environment for all persons, including persons with disabilities.<\/p>

    Accessible Transportation<\/strong><\/p>

    Accessible transportation plays an important role in enabling persons with disabilities to access education, employment, healthcare and community services. Efforts towards accessible transportation may include:<\/p>

    • Reserved seating for persons with disabilities;<\/li>
    • Accessible buses and transport facilities;<\/li>
    • Priority assistance for passengers with disabilities; and<\/li>
    • Clear and accessible information on transport services.<\/li><\/ul>

      Information and Communication Accessibility<\/strong><\/p>

      Access to information is essential for participation in all aspects of life. Information should be made available in formats that are accessible to persons with different types of disabilities. These may include:<\/p>

      • \u00a0Braille;<\/li>
      • \u00a0Large print;<\/li>
      • \u00a0Audio formats;<\/li>
      • Easy-to-read materials; and<\/li>
      • Sign language interpretation.<\/li><\/ul>

        Public information should be provided in ways that ensure equal access for all citizens.<\/p>

        Information and Communication Technologies (ICT)<\/strong><\/p>

        Advances in technology provide significant opportunities for promoting inclusion and independence. Accessible ICT solutions may include:<\/p>

        • Screen reader compatible websites;<\/li>
        • Captioned multimedia content;<\/li>
        • Voice recognition software;<\/li>
        • Assistive technologies;<\/li>
        • Accessible mobile applications; and<\/li>
        • Alternative input devices.<\/li><\/ul>

          Public bodies and service providers are encouraged to ensure that their digital services and online information are accessible to all users.<\/p>


          Universal Design<\/strong><\/p>

          Universal design refers to the design of products, environments, programmes and services that can be used by all people, to the greatest extent possible, without the need for adaptation or specialised design.<\/p>

          The application of universal design benefits not only persons with disabilities but also older persons, parents with young children and many\u00a0 other members of society.<\/p>

          Shared Responsibility<\/strong><\/p>

          Promoting accessibility is a shared responsibility involving government institutions, local authorities, businesses, service providers, civil society organisations and the community at large.
