Services
For most person with disabilities, support services are necessary preconditions to live and fully participate in the community, with choices equal to others. Service and supports for people with disabilities are those government or other institutional services and supports specifically provided to enable people who have disabilities to participate in society and community life.
The Disability Empowerment Unit provides a large array of direct services with a view to promote inclusion of persons with disabilities in the mainstream society.
Description
To encourage parents to send disabled children to school (mainstream, special or day-care centers), the equivalent of bus fare of one accompanying parent is refunded. In case the child is severely disabled and travels by special means of transport, equivalent of bus fare for both the child and the parent is refunded. Payment is made on the basis of attendance submitted by the schools.
Eligibility Criteria
Students with disabilities attending daycare centres, specialised, integrated and mainstream schools

- Copy of NIC of Responsible Parents/ guardians
- Utility Bills

Description
Taxi fare is refunded to students with severe disabilities who cannot travel by ordinary means of transport and who are attending Universities and mainstream schools (primary and secondary schools). Payment is made on the basis of attendance submitted by the institutions.

Description
The François Sockalingum Award is a scholarship scheme set up by the National Council for the Rehabilitation of Disabled Persons (NCRD) which operates under the aegis of this Ministry. Its objectives are to encourage disabled students to follow secondary studies as well as promote the concept of self-reliance and independent living among them.
Eligibility Criteria
Students with disabilities who pass the Primary School Achievement Certificate (PSAC) and pursue their secondary studies are eligible to a monthly stipend of Rs 750.

Description
Concessionary airfare is provided to persons with disabilities travelling by Air Mauritius
Eligibility Criteria
The applicant should be a beneficiary of a Basic Invalidity Pension

- Memo from Social Security Office certifying beneficiary is in receipt of a Basic Invalidity Pension, and
- Birth Certificate and/or ID Card
Description
Upon submission of a letter from the Disability Unit of this Ministry to the Passport and Immigration office, persons with disabilities benefit from a concessionary fee of Rs 400 for the obtention of a passport as opposed to Rs 700 for others

The applicant should be a beneficiary of a Basic Invalidity Pension

Description
To enable easy access to public places like shopping centers and other amenities, free parking coupons are being provided to person with disabilities with severe mobility problems.
There are 2 types of parking coupons:-
- Yellow parking coupon – to be used in any vehicle in which the severely disabled person is travelling.
- Blue parking coupon – to be used in the vehicle driven by a disabled person or a vehicle owned by an NGO in the disability sector.
Eligibility Criteria
Person with disabilities should have severe mobility problems.

- Photocopy of ID Card and Birth Certificate;
- 2 recent passport size photos;
- Proof of address; and
- Horsepower of the vehicle if the disabled person owns and drives it. (Same applies for NGOs)
Description
In view of providing some relief to parents whose wards are registered with the Disability Unit of this Ministry, leisure activities are organized regularly upon request at the three Recreation Centres operating under the aegis of this Ministry for the benefit of children with disabilities.

Description
Persons with disabilities are entitled to 100% duty-free facilities to purchase adapted cars not exceeding 1600 cc once every 7 years
Eligibility Criteria
- Who is in gainful employment
- The vehicle they intend to purchase should be adapted to their disability.
- They should use it as an “outil de travail”.
- They should hold a valid driving license.
- with permanent orthopaedic disability of 60% or above;
- having severe mobility problem; and
- heavily dependent on others for activities of daily living, as certified by the Medical Board of the Ministry responsible for the subject of social security.

- Who is in gainful employment

Description
With a view to improving the quality of life of persons with disabilities, a special loan scheme has been launched by the Employees Welfare Fund since February 2014.
The purposes of loan are listed as hereunder:
- Purchase of assistive devices, either new or refurbished;
- Upgrading of the living conditions through infrastructural adjustments and/or movables (furniture & equipment);
- For medical treatment prescribed by official health service providers, and
- For studies/training (locally or abroad) , approved by authorized institutions.
Eligibility Criteria
All employees from the public and private sector who:
- Are disabled.
- Have immediate family member/s who is/are disabled.
- Applicant/Beneficiary should be registered with Ministry of Social Security, National Solidarity and Reform Institutions.
- Applicant and Guarantor should be in permanent employment.
