Recreation, sports, leisure and cultural activities are natural ingredients for a healthy lifestyle. People with disabilities experience the same need for sport, including competitive sport and recreation as their non disabled peers. Sport is generally regarded as one of the vital components in the integration of people with disabilities into society.

In this connection, the Sports Act 2016 makes provision for the establishment of the Mauritius Paralympic Committee grouping all National Sports Federations catering for person with a disability and which shall be an organisation registered under the Registration of Associations Act.

The Mauritius Paralympic Committee is affiliated with the International Paralympic Committee and coordinates the participation of person with disabilities in different disciplines. Apart from sports, leisure and culture can also be used as a tool for development of personalities while at the same time encouraging networking between people with diverse abilities.

In line with the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, cultural activities are organized for persons with disabilities and opportunities are given to them to showcase their inner talents and potential. Artists with disabilities are regularly invited to give performance on numerous official functions.
